3D printed steaks one step closer

One of the downsides to many plant and cell based meat alternatives is that they inherently lack the structure of a whole muscle product. Giuseppe Scionti of Spanish startup Novameat has used 3D printing technology to produce a prototype plant based product which mimics the texture of beef. “By combining tissue engineering and bio-printing with modern cooking methods, he created a vegan product that boasts the same consistency, appearance and nutritional properties as animal meat products.” says the article.

The product is made from ingredients such as rice, peas and seaweed. This gives the product a good amino acid profile and Scionti the adds “lipids, fibres, minerals and vitamins, to mimic the nutritional properties of animal meat.”
